The virtual headquarters of Instituto Cervantes in Second Life recreate the representative building of calle Alcalá in Madrid. With this initiative, Instituto Cervantes places itself at the forefront of Spanish cultural institutions with own presence in Second Life, in line with other prestigious international institutions and organizations. The Cervantes Island has been designed and produced by Metafuturing, S.L., a company based in Madrid and specialized in Second Life, Virtual Reality and Internet services.

Instituto Cervantes is a worldwide non-profit organization created by the Spanish government in 1991. It is the largest organization in the world concerned with the teaching of Spanish, and it maintains a presence in over twenty different countries throughout 54 centers devoted to the Spanish and Hispanic American culture and Spanish Language. The mission of Instituto Cervantes is to promote the teaching, study, and use of Spanish as a second language and to contribute to the advancement of the Spanish and Hispanic American cultures throughout non-Spanish speaking countries. The Institute is named after Miguel de Cervantes (1547-1616), the most important figure in the history of Spanish literature.
La sede virtual del Instituto Cervantes en Second Life ha recreado el emblemático edificio de la calle Alcalá de Madrid para albergar salas de exposiciones, un salón de actos, pantallas de vídeo y aulas virtuales de español con el fin de llegar a los usuarios de Internet a través de las nuevas técnicas de realidad virtual e interacción 3D.

El Cervantes ofrecerá así un lugar de reunión para los internautas de todo el mundo interesados en la lengua y la cultura españolas. En la actualidad es posible realizar un recorrido virtual por la exposición sobre el poeta mexicano Alfonso Reyes, ver y escuchar entrevistas y documentales, así como acceder a la programación cultural del Instituto en todo el mundo a través de las diversas pantallas distribuidas por el vestíbulo del edificio.
También se han reproducido la biblioteca y espacios de interés arquitectónico como la cúpula que corona el edificio del Cervantes, obra del arquitecto Antonio Palacios, o la caja fuerte que alberga la Caja de las Letras, en la que se han empezado a depositar los legados de escritores y artistas españoles como Francisco Ayala y Antonio Gamoneda.
Con esta iniciativa el Instituto Cervantes se sitúa a la vanguardia de las instituciones culturales españolas con presencia propia en Second Life, en línea con otras instituciones y organismos internacionales de prestigio como la Universidad de Harvard.
La presencia del Cervantes en Second Life irá creciendo con el tiempo hasta reproducir espacios que permitan mostrar la mayoría de las actividades que el Instituto desarrolla en todo el mundo.
