El Pais Semanal, August 6, 2006 - Mi otra vida virtual - Article on Second Life on the weekly magazine of the leading Spanish daily newspaper El Pais. I appear in the pictures below produced by the magazine's staff together with my SL avatar and my wife's SL avatar. See my comments after the excerpts from the Spanish text.
Pero, ¿qué es exactamente Second Life? “SL es un país”, explica Rosedale, “un lugar digital en el que quienes viven allí experimentan algo imposible en el mundo real, que están controlando su futuro”, añade. “Es el primer mundo virtual que se ha convertido en fenómeno de masas”, explica Giulio Prisco, licenciado en Física Teórica y Computacional y usuario de SL como Giulio Perhaps. “Es el fenómeno social más interesante que hay en estos momentos. Puedes sentir en tus huesos que estás inmerso en algo importante”.
También hay sexo en Second Life. Hay pornografía, hay nudismo y hay prostitución. Mujeres avatares ofrecen relaciones sexuales virtuales de media hora de duración por unos dos euros. Y también hay quien busca relaciones serias, es decir, se casa dentro del propio juego, embaraza a su avatar y tiene hijos.
John Lester, antiguo director de neurología en el hospital General de Massachusetts. Lester está trabajando con enfermos con el síndrome de Asperger, que tienen dificultades para entablar relaciones sociales. El médico investiga si un mundo virtual, en el que los enfermos puedan relacionarse a través de un tercero que le representa, puede ayudarles para mejorar sus relaciones en el mundo real.
El número de residentes de SL aumenta día a día, pero ¿qué es lo que buscan realmente sus usuarios? “Mucha diversión”, dice Rosedale, y añade: “Buscan escapar. Les mueve el deseo de ser alguien que quieren ser, pero quizá no pueden”.
The article is good but covers mainly the "escapist" videogame aspect of Second Life and not enough its "real world" social, cultural and business aspect. The only exception is the reference to John Lester's work with Asperger patients. I hope that after this first introduction to Second Life on the mainstream Spanish press there will be other articles dedicated to its more "serious" aspects.
Translation of my comments above: “It is the first virtual world that is becoming a mass phenomenon”, says Giulio Prisco, trained in theoretical and computational physics and SL user as Giulio Perhaps. “It is the most interesting social phenomenon at this moment. You can feel in your bones that you are part of something important”.
