Uvvy 2.0 design notes
From uvvy
5 March: I have already terraformed the island and added part of the streets. To add the other streets I will have to remove the exixting buildings, that get in the way. This will be done on March 12 as explained below.
I have decided to radically change the layout of uvvy island. The changes to be implemented are needed to bring the look&feel of the island more in line with the requirements formulated by clients.
This does not mean that we will host all clients on uvvy island (I am buying land for most clients elsewhere), but the current layout and architecture of the island do not make it suitable as a showcase.
The general look&feel will be "simplified reality". Most users, especially those not very familiar with VR, relate better to imitation of physical reality. Of course the day to be much more imaginative will come, but that day is not now. We are still in a phase where casual users, especially those mainly motivated by professional interests unrelated to VR, find it easier to suspend disbelief and take VR experiences seriously when things "look like home".
On March 12, all objects, scripts etc. on the island will be returned to their owners' inventory. Please package all large objects that you own for easy redeployment. Some structures (e.g. the pub) will be redeployed at the end of the process below.
Then the island will be flattened at sea level and covered with a grass texture.
Then the island will be divided in 4 quadrants by roads. Roads will run in the center and at the sides in such a way as to permit easily adding new adjacent islands with a similar layout.
The 4 quadrants will be allocated as:
One quadrant for our VR company metafuturing SL. This area will include a meeting space and workspace for the Intermetaverse group and similar initiatives.
One quadrant for the World Transhumanist Association and the IEET. This area will include a meeting space and workspace for the WTA-SL group and a large auditorium for transhumanist events.
One quadrant for social events and a display area for art, pictures etc.
One quadrant with a large multipurpose hangar-warehouse. This can be used as a closed building and practice workspace.
There will be no floating structures.
Building and scripting by guests will be disabled everywhere except in the hangar (sandbox).
There will be a strict access control policy TBD. It happens more and more frequently that griefers disrupt meetings and events. I am thinking to restrict access to the island to selected groups (e.g. uvvy, WTA, Intermetaverse etc.). Knowing that griefing results in immediate banning not only from the island but also from groups may (I hope) help reducing attacks.
This page will probably change frequently until March 12.
